How Often Should You Actually Clean Your Carpets?

Carpet manufacturers typically recommend professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months. That is a reasonable baseline, but it is a floor, not a rule — the right interval for your home depends on traffic, pets, children and how the space is used.

A practical schedule

For a low-traffic home with no pets, once a year is plenty. Add a pet and you should move to every six to nine months, because dander and oils work deep into the pile and accelerate wear. Add young children and you are looking at every six months — spills, crumbs and crafts all end up in the fibres. Homes with allergy or asthma sufferers in the household should treat six months as the maximum, since carpets are a reservoir for dust mites and dander.

Commercial spaces are a different calculation entirely. Offices and clinics with heavy foot traffic often need quarterly extraction in high-traffic lanes even when the carpet looks fine.

The signs it is overdue

Carpet hides soil remarkably well, which is precisely the problem. Look for these signals: traffic lanes that appear darker or duller than the surrounding pile; a carpet that feels slightly stiff or tacky underfoot; a musty or "doggy" smell that returns within days of vacuuming; increased sneezing or congestion indoors; and visible darkening along walls and under furniture.

One more subtle sign: if you vacuum and the carpet still does not look lifted, the soil has bonded to the fibres. Household vacuums remove surface debris but not the bonded soil, oils and residues that sit at the base of the pile.

Why professional extraction matters

Hot-water extraction injects a cleaning solution deep into the pile and immediately vacuums it back out along with suspended soil. That is what removes bonded grime rather than redistributing it. Low-moisture encapsulation is a good alternative for delicate rugs and for spaces where fast drying is essential.

What matters most is that the method is matched to the fibre. Wool, viscose and antique rugs react badly to aggressive machine scrubbing, which is why a proper service assesses fibre and colour-fastness before touching anything.

Protect the investment

Carpet is one of the most expensive surfaces in a home. Regular professional cleaning does not just make it look better — it removes abrasive soil that physically grinds fibres down, which is why professionally maintained carpet measurably outlasts neglected carpet. Add stain protection after cleaning and future spills have far less chance of setting.

If you are unsure where your carpet sits on the schedule, book an assessment. A good cleaner will tell you honestly whether you need extraction now or whether a lighter treatment will do.
